Swindon Open Studios 2018

We are taking part In SOS again this year. Last year was so successful and enjoyed by all so it was an easy decision to take part again.

We are only opening for the first weekend ( Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd September). 

Unfortunately the organisers of SOS changed the usual weekends the event takes place and the United Church Hall in Cricklade, we hire had already been let for the second weekend this year. So please mark your calendars so you do not miss us.

We really are looking forward to seeing you. . We will have 6 of our members demonstrating and selling their work. We will also have an exhibition of work from members not able to participate this year. Then just to tempt you further there will be tea and cakes. 

The hall has excellent disabled facilities. Parking is in the street or the car parks by the town hall or the back of Tesco's... all free.

Debby Turner

Members of GWE were well represented today at the funeral of Debby Turner at St. Leonard's church Blunsdon.
A wonderful service, the church was overflowing with mourners all paying a personal tribute to Debby.
She was a very special person, generous, kind and enthusiastic. We will all miss her very much. RIP.

Our Exhibition will be opening soon.. Saturday 24th March and it will run until Thursday 12th April 2018.

Please ring to check opening times over Easter.. we have been assured the venue will be open for business as usual over the Easter period.

A stitch response to things seen close at hand

Great Western Embroiderers would like to welcome you to Found on the Doorstep, their third  exhibition at the John Bowen Gallery, Malmesbury.

The work on show

The work on show is particularly varied this time. Members have explored the theme from many points of view. Some have approached it literally, exploring things seen at home and on their doorstep. Others have looked at what was close at hand when holidaying or travelling in very different places. Still others have focused especially on the ‘found’ aspect of the theme, searching through their stash for fabric, thread or previously unfinished pieces to inspire and create anew.

The techniques employed include hand and machine embroidery and stitch, patchwork and quilting, weaving and the use of original photographs and digital media to generate images.  As always, there are many traditional pieces to be seen but there is also abstract work which explores novel ways of working with the old crafts, using unexpected materials or taking an unusual perspective.

Throughout the year, members have taken part in a group challenge to create Sinchies, small pieces 6 inches square where the only limiting factor other than size was the use of specified pairs of colours. These colour combinations were drawn out randomly every two months and members were then left to their own devises to use any style, fabric or thread that took their fancy.

About us

Great Western Embroiderers was formed in 2007. Members share a love of stitch and textiles and have a wide range of skills and interests. Many had very little experience on joining the group. Others had studied for and gained specialist qualifications.

The group meets regularly to stitch together and prepare for exhibitions, exploring new areas of the craft thanks to members who feel able and willing to share their skills, and through occasional visiting speakers, workshops and visits. Meetings are held in Cricklade on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month (except August) and the group now numbers around 20 members who come from north Wiltshire and south Gloucestershire.

This exhibition illustrates the breadth of our interests and we hope that you will enjoy the varied techniques and styles of work on display.

Oxford outing

We visited the Pitts Rivers Museum... and loved the artefacts.. so inspirational.

We also visited the Modern art gallery link ----Here.. we loved the modern interpretation of the tapestry. Do go if you can.

We then went along to the Ashmolean...... a inspiration packed day.

Swindon Open Studios Part 2

The Cricklade town crier.... helping to draw the crowds to our Open studio event. Just a selection of the groups work on show on the stage. The individual artist had stands in the hall.

A fantastic 2 weekends attended by over 100 interested members of the public. We loved meeting you and chatting over tea and cake.
