August Outing to Buscot

In August we do not have a meeting but have an outing instead.  This year we went to the National Trust property Buscot Park and House.  Visitor Info (buscot-park.com)

It opens at 2:00pm so we decided to arrive early and take a picnic to eat at the picnic tables by the car park.  The weather wasn't quite playing ball but we were prepared and didn't get too wet.

Luckily the sun then came out and we had a lovely time wandering around the walled garden admiring the flowers and produce.

We also admired the fish swimming in the pool.

Some of us then had a walk around the beautiful grounds.

We had a wander around the house which had the Briar Rose murals by Edward Burne-Jones and a couple of the upstairs rooms had Pre-Raphaelite paintings on show and a beautiful bed.  These were of particular interest to us as it tied into this year's Arts and Crafts project that we are working on for Swindon Open Studios.

We resisted having a dip in the pool and went for a delicious tea and cake instead before heading home.

July 2024 Meeting - Christmas In July

At our July meeting Davina, one of our members, showed us how to make a Star Christmas decoration.

As it is July I'd like to say the sun was beating down outside - but I think it was actually raining!  Inside though we were feeling Christmassy with our festive material and sequins.

We all enjoyed making a star that we can use to hang on the tree, or combine with others to use as a Christmas garland.  Thank you for a great workshop Davina.

The Paris Olympics

The Olympic Games are taking place between Friday 26th July and Sunday 11th August 2024 in France, with most events taking place in Paris.

This year's challenge for Great Western Embroiderers' members was to produce a piece of work on a 12 inch canvas using the Olympic colours and circles.  Members produced a lovely variety of work as they all interpreted the brief in their own style.

This work can be seen from now until the end of the Olympics in the window of the Cricklade Town Council Office.

The Olympic pieces will be on show again as part of Swindon Open Studios when we will be exhibiting them, along with work produced on the theme of Arts and Crafts and a selection of other work that members have done as part of Great Western Embroiderers in the past.  We will be venue number 20 and will be at the Jenner Hall on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd September 2024 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.  While visiting us why not also go to see the other Cricklade venues open that weekend - number 21 Cricklade Art Group and number 19 Tim Baynes.

June 2024 Meeting - Stumpwork

At our June meeting a small group of us had a tutorial in stumpwork from our member Maureen to show us how to create three dimensional embroidery.

We all had a lot of fun using beads, wire and padding to make berries and leaves and an acorn.  There was much hilarity when we were getting to grips with how small some of the pieces were, but we were soon enjoying the stitching and we have all said we will endeavour to finish the piece of work before the next meeting.  Thank you Maureen for an enjoyable tutorial.

At the July meeting the members who took part in the workshop had been working on their pieces at home and brought the work in to show everyone.

May 2024 Meeting - Gelli Plates

At our May meeting we had fun playing with Gelli Plates.  Our Chair, Maggie, led a workshop to demonstrate how to use Gelli Plates to print images onto paper and gave us tips on printing onto fabric too.

We had all brought leaves with us that we had pressed at home and Maggie had also brought some stamps with her that we were able to use to incorporate different shapes.  It was a lot of fun trying out the various techniques to print both negative and positive images.

We left inspired about how to incorporate this technique into our work and looking forward to experimenting some more at home.

Cricklade Museum Exhibition

One of the themes of our 2023 Swindon Open Studios exhibition was 'Cricklade'.  Members produced a variety of work in many different styles depicting what Cricklade meant to them.

As part of our research for this we were generously given access to the collection in the Cricklade Museum.  Objects in the Museum collection inspired some of the pieces that were produced.  We also had a lovely day walking around Cricklade and were kindly given access to St Sampson's Church  and St Mary's Catholic ChurchThis gave members lots of food for thought and helped to develop ideas.

This work is now on show in the exhibition 'A Walk Through Cricklade in Stitches' that is on at the Cricklade Museum until 9th November 2024.  Opening times are 10:00 to 12:00 Wednesday and Saturday.  It is a lovely museum and it is well worth having a look around while you are there.

Our meeting today was led by Judy one of our members and we experimented with beading.

We also delivered our pieces of work created last year, illustrating Cricklade to the local Museum in Calcutt Street. The exhibition will be running from Saturday 4th May to Tuesday 12th November 2024.
